Fun day at Bright Futures Secondary School

Have a look at these great photos and videos from Friday’s fun day at Bright Futures Secondary School. The students had chance to relax and have some fun after working hard.

Sarah’s blog 23/04/25

Teacher’s have given up some of their Easter holidays so that the students at Bright Futures Secondary School and p8 class at Chambo Primary School could have some extra tuition to prepare for upcoming exams. We are grateful to the teachers for supporting the students like this.

On Friday, they had a fun day so that everyone had a different day away from their normal classes. In the morning, the activities on offer were; drawing, sewing and knitting. After lunch there were netball, football and rugby matches.

I think you will see in the photos and videos below that everyone enjoyed themselves.

We are still trying to raise funds to buy notebooks & pens for p8 students at Chambo Primary. If you would like to make a small donation then here is the link https://donorsee.com/project/25617?share=1 or you can email me for our bank details at contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Thank you to all our sponsors and other supporters for giving these young people choices and chances for a brighter future. Maggie’s visit to Lilongwe

Sarah’s blog 4/4/25

Last month, there was a conference in Lilongwe organised by Malawi Rugby Union and Child Fund Rugby called ‘Grassroots to Global’. It was for girls and women to try to increase the numbers of girls and women taking part in rugby and coaching rugby.

Jack Mphande is the senior rugby development officer who has introduced rugby to the far north of Malawi. We have helped facilitate his visits several times and now have a great relationship with Jack. Hundreds of young people in the far north of Malawi are now playing rugby thanks to him.

Jack got in touch to say that there was funding for one girl from each district in Malawi to go to Lilongwe for that meeting. Maggie Kabaghe, a 16 year old student in S2 at Bright Futures Secondary School was chosen because of her skill and enjoyment of playing rugby and because of her positive attitude.

However, we knew that it wouldn’t be the right thing to do to expect Maggie, who has never had the opportunity to go anywhere, to travel on her own to the capital city, Lilongwe, all by herself and on more than one bus.

One of her teachers, Rose Thawi, agreed to accompany Maggie. It cost quite a lot of money to cover the costs for Rose for the weekend with travel, food and accommodation. We were so glad that Rose was happy to go with Maggie as what a wonderful opportunity for an orphan, living in extreme poverty in rural northern Malawi. Maggie was given a bag, trainers and new clothes, soap and a towel etc for her trip.

There was space for Rose to join the conference too and they both enjoyed their weekend a great deal. There were lots of discussions about barriers to sport for girls and women and they learned a great deal and enjoyed meeting new people.

They left early on Friday morning and didn’t get back until late on Monday evening. They were very tired but happy. Maggie was treated like a celebrity by her classmates on her return.

Once Maggie’s exams are over, she and her teacher, Rose, will put together some ideas on how they can get more girls involved in rugby in their local area.

Thank you so much to Jack Mphande for his hard work and support and for giving Maggie this wonderful opportunity. Thank you to the other organisers in Malawi Rugby Union and for Child Fund Rugby for the funding.

I hope you enjoy the photos from Maggie and Rose’s weekend. Thank you to everyone who sponsors the young people we help to support. With your help they have a brighter future with opportunities, choices and chances that they wouldn’t otherwise have had. Please do email me if you would like to support a young person it only costs £25 p/m. contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Thanks, Sarah x

Rugby roundup

Three amazing days of touch rugby. Thank you Arnold Clark cars, Jack Mphande, Malawi Rugby Development Officer, Levison Mlambya, and everyone who donated sports kit and the volunteers who make this a huge success.

Sarah’s blog 19/10/24

What an amazing three days of rugby for the Chisenga Zone Schools this week. Jack Mphande, Malawi Rugby’s Development Officer, based in Lilongwe, made the long journey north again for training and tournaments.

Rugby had never been played in the far north until Jack introduced touch rugby a couple of years ago. The children, all of whom are living in extreme poverty, absolutely love touch rugby and have enjoyed being part of this year’s rugby initiative once again.

Arnold Clark cars, who are the new Scotland Rugby Team sponsor, gave us a donation to fund Jack’s visit, the training and the tournament for the Chisenga Zone Rugby initiative. So we are very grateful to Arnold Clark cars, Jack Mphande and also Levison Mlambya who has put in a huge amount of work behind the scenes.

On day 1, Jack was instructing teachers from local schools in the theory and practical skills of rugby. On day 2, Jack visited local schools to supervise the teachers leading a rugby training session. Day 3 was the tournament.

All the schools involved came together for a day of touch rugby matches and had a wonderful time. As no big charities feed children in primary schools in the far north, many are malnourished, all are hungry. We will not facilitate a sporting event like the rugby tournament without the children (and adults) having a proper meal and a drink. Their health is important and we cannot ask them to play sport without offering sustenance. Also, a nutritious meal is a treat for them, so they will have enjoyed their special day even more because they went home will full tummies.

Here are some more photos and videos. Congratulations to Kayilizi Primary School – both the boys team and the girls team were the overall winners. All schools were given new sports kit to take back to their schools. Each student who took part was given a pencil and notebook.

We are trying to raise funds for a football tournament (same format) then a netball tournament. Here is the link if you’d like to donate https://donorsee.com/project/24384?share=1 or you can email me for bank details contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Your support will be much appreciated. Thank you everyone, Sarah x

Rugby – Day 2 – primary school visits

Day 2 of the Chisenga Zone Schools Rugby Initiative. Jack Mphande has been busy visiting local primary schools. Thanks to Arnold Clark cars for supporting the event.

Sarah’s blog 14/10/24

Jack Mphande, Malawi Rugby Development Officer has had an extremely busy second day of the Chisenga Zone Schools Rugby Initiative. He has visited 4 different rural primary schools, delivering rugby training sessions and supporting the teachers from each of those primary schools with their new coaching skills from yesterday’s session. Thank you Jack for encouraging and inspiring everyone.

Tomorrow is a school holiday in Malawi – it’s Mothers’ Day. Teams from each school will come with their teachers to take part in a day of rugby matches and tournaments. Children will receive a nutritious meal and a drink which will be a great treat for each of them. No big charities are feeding children in schools in the far north of Malawi. So many are malnourished, all are hungry. We cannot expect them to take part in a day of sport without feeding them so we are very grateful to Arnold Clark cars for supporting us financially with this rugby event.

Here is the link to yesterday’s rugby session for teachers.

And here is the link to our fundraiser to try to raise money for a football tournament to happen (similar set up to the rugby) https://donorsee.com/project/24384?share=1 and we would be really grateful if you could help make this happen. The young people would be even more delighted! Thank you for reading and supporting, Sarah x

Rugby Day 1 – theory & practical for teachers

Children living in extreme poverty are learning to play rugby and can forget about their hardships whilst they learn new skills and grow in confidence and have fun with their friends.

Sarah’s blog 13/10/24

Firstly, I would like to thank Malawi Rugby Development Officer, Jack Mphande, for once again making time to travel the long distance north to spend time with teachers and students. This is the Chisenga Zone Schools Rugby Initiative.

Secondly, I’d like to thank Arnold Clark car dealership for providing the money for this rugby initiative. The money Arnold Clark have given us has paid for Jack’s travel costs and his expenses as well as providing food for all teachers and students who will be taking part in training and the tournament on Tuesday. We are so grateful for this money as without it we would have had to raise funds and this Rugby Initiative probably wouldn’t have happened until next year. Thank you Arnold Clark who are new sponsors of Scottish Rugby.

Also, a big thank you to Levison Mlambya, Director of Bright Futures Secondary School who works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything happens. Levison isn’t often found in front of the camera so doesn’t get as much credit as he should for the huge amount of work he puts in coordinating and facilitating people and activities.

Until Jack Mphande’s first visit, rugby had never been played in the far north of Malawi. Now it is being played at school, along with football and netball. Jack’s visits are really welcomed and there is great excitement amongst the students. When he first visited, the young people we help to support were surprised that he wanted to spend time with them. They were used to being ignored and not thought to be important. Their self-esteem and confidence has grown so much since that first visit. Girls and boys have learned new skills and love playing team sports with their friends. They can forget about their problems for a while.

Today, teachers from local schools in the Chisenga Zone, including teachers from Bright Futures Secondary School, attended a theory class at Bright Futures Campus and then tested their new coaching skills on some of the students from Bright Futures Secondary School. You can see from the photos and videos that Levison has just sent how enthusiastic and engaged everyone is.

Competition Time. We also want to thank Arnold Clark for providing two tickets for the Scotland v Fiji match at Murrayfield on 2nd November. As well as being able to win two tickets, there are other perks like entry to the Legends Lounge. For a £5 donation, you can choose a number. contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com . Arnold Clark, Scottish Rugby & Changing Lives Malawi

We are so excited about this new partnership with Arnold Clark, Scottish Rugby and http://www.changinglivesmalawi.com

Sarah’s blog 2/8/24

Yesterday we were contacted by Arnold Clark to ask if we would like to help with a promotion they would be doing today. They are the new sponsors for the front of the Scotland Rugby Team shirts. Today, they announced that 500 people could swap their last season’s shirt for a brand new shirt at one of the two Macron shops. We were asked if we would like all the preloved shirts to send to the young people we help to support in Malawi.

As well as gifting 500 shirts for us to reuse, Arnold Clark have agreed to pay for the container costs for these shirts which is a huge help. And, what we are really excited about, is that they have promised to donate £500 to ensure we can run another rugby tournament for the orphans and other vulnerable children.

We are absolutely delighted that these shirts will be going to young people in need and that we will have money to ensure that Jack Mphande, Malawi Rugby’s Development Officer can come and visit for a third time. Thanks to our supporters, we were able to pay Jack’s expenses for his previous trips to introduce touch rugby to those in the far north of Malawi.

When the young people meet for training and the tournament, we will have money to be able to feed them all and provide drinks. No big charities are working that far north to feed children in primary schools, so all of these children are hungry (most are malnourished) and need to eat so they will have enough energy to enjoy their games of rugby.

Until recently, these orphans were not used to people visiting and wanting to spend time with them. It really helps their confidence and self-esteem. They learn new skills and have fun with their friends and are able to forget about the dire poverty they live in and the trauma they have been through.

Thank you Arnold Clark for partnering with us to ensure the continuation of grass roots rugby in northern Malawi. Thank you everyone who donates their tops that will ensure the young people have matching tops instead of their old and ripped ones. They will all be delighted. Thank you to the rugby development officer, Jack Mphande, for agreeing to visit again. There will be so much excitement when the young people know you are coming!

There will be lots of photos and videos so please do follow us on social media if you haven’t already done so. Here is the link to the new rugby shirts that came out today https://www.facebook.com/share/v/vm3miom5zWkb5oZh/

and here is a link to another of my blogs with some of the projects we are helping to support. https://changinglivesmalawi.com/2024/08/01/help-us-feed-the-orphans-please/

We always say it takes teamwork and we are very grateful to be given this opportunity to reach more people through partnership working. To the team at Arnold Clark – thank you. To Scottish Rugby – thank you. To everyone else who supports us – thank you also. We couldn’t do what we do without you all, Sarah. (Below is a photo of the new Scotland Rugby shirt and there are a few photos from Jack’s previous visits to teach touch rugby to the orphans)

Strathendrick Rugby Club Donation

Sarah’s blog 09/02/24

A lovely surprise was delivered to my front door this week…. a big bag of junior rugby kit courtesy of our brilliant local team – Strathendrick Rugby Club. Thank you very much as this kit will be gratefully received and well used by some of the vulnerable young people we help to support in rural northern Malawi.

Strathendrick have supported us before having raised money through a bake sale and raffling Scotland rugby shirts for us. It’s great to have local support. Thank you so much, Sarah x

Here is the link to the Scotland Rugby Team kit that was donated and modelled by some of the young people last week. Some of these kit donations are kept for use at the foundation, others are shared with local primary schools and grassroots teams. https://changinglivesmalawi.com/2024/02/05/scotland-rugby-kit/

Scotland Rugby Kit

Sarah’s blog 05/02/24

Good morning! A timely post during the Six Nations Rugby Tournament. Did everyone enjoy the first weekend of games?

There were some willing young people, happy to model these new kits….. a very generous donation from Scottish Rugby Union. Thank you so much for this fantastic opportunity for the children and young people we help to support to have new, matching, colourful kit from the SRU.

As you may remember, we facilitated a two week Rugby Festival in October. Touch rugby has only recently been introduced in the north of Malawi and this is the second time that Jack Mphande, MRU Development Officer, has travelled north to spend time with young people and their teachers/coaches to introduce rugby within schools as a new sport.

Thanks to our supporters, we were able to pay for Jack’s travel, accommodation, expenses as well as food & drink for all the participants in the training sessions and tournaments. Sports kit & rugby balls that had been donated to us were gifted to each of the teams involved in the Rugby Festival.

Grassroots rugby is well and truly established now, thanks to Jack Mphande’s time, skills and dedication. Thanks also goes to all the people who donated to help make that experience happen for the hundreds of vulnerable children who took part. https://gofund.me/22e38b07

We would like to be able to host another Rugby Festival this year. We have two signed Scotland Rugby Shirts which SRU kindly donated. The link is here to donate…it’s £5 per turn. https://gofund.me/22e38b07 All money we receive will go towards next year’s Rugby Festival. For children who are living in extreme poverty, this will be something to really look forward to again. They aren’t used to people coming to spend time with them.

Once the weather improves (it’s the rainy season) I am sure there will be lots of action shots of the young people enjoying playing rugby. Thank you again, Sarah x (I’ve attached two of my blogs from the rugby festival…there are lots of photos in each. But there are more blogs from Jack’s visits on my blog page on our website).

Advent Calendar – highlighting projects & children – day 7

Sarah’s blog 07/12/23

On day 7, we are highlighting health & well-being; specifically sport. The young people love playing sport with their friends. Football and netball are national sports and, more recently, touch rugby has been introduced.

Whilst the young people are playing team sports they are learning new skills, following rules and working with others, keeping fit and having fun with their friends.

We are grateful to all the clubs and schools who have donated preloved kit to us to distribute to teams in rural northern Malawi and also to gift to local schools. Thank you also to the people who spend time with these young people coaching them and helping raise their self-esteem. If you would like to help support our projects then please donate to https://gofund.me/d3cf8c3a .Thanks for reading, Sarah x

The Final Rugby Tournament

Sarah’s blog 13/10/23

As I type this, Jack Mphande, Malawi Rugby Union’s Rugby Development Officer, is on his way back to Lilongwe which is over 15 hours on a bus. When he arrives home he is straight into finishing an assignment that he put aside whilst he travelled north for the two-week Rugby Festival.

Jack had been making plans for this visit for a while, after the success of his first visit two years ago when he introduced touch rugby to children in the north for the very first time. We were delighted that Jack was keen to visit the far north again to spread the joy of the sport of rugby with his enthusiasm and coaching skills.

Meanwhile, here in Scotland, we had been raising funds to ensure that there was enough money for this rugby festival to run smoothly. We are so grateful to every single supporter who has donated to our fundraiser to make the last two weeks of rugby a huge success. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you also to individuals and clubs and schools who donated sports kit and rugby balls that have been shared with the various schools taking part.

Levison welcomed Jack to stay at The Foundation again for his second visit. Together, they ensured the planned programme went smoothly and Levison liaised with the education and sports officers. Levison also arranged for food, and water to be bought for everyone and arranged lunches, and someone to cook, for the adults and children. They organised which schools would be taking part and which days schools would be visited. Schools were split into two clusters. In order to make this programme sustainable, Jack was able to spend time coaching two teachers from each school as well as some community coaches. He visited each school individually and, at the end of each of the two weeks everyone came together for a tournament.

As yet, there are no big charities feeding children in schools in this area. Most children are living in extreme poverty. It was important to us that all children had a snack and a bottle of water when playing. On tournament days, we ensured there was enough money for everyone to have a proper lunch, snack and bottle of water. Students were given pens and pencils as a gift for taking part. Each school was given sports kit and rugby balls that had been donated by clubs and individuals.

Sustainable development goals were kept in mind when organising this rugby festival; SDG2 – zero hunger, SDG3 – good health & wellbeing, SDG4 – quality education, SDG5 – gender equality, SDG6 – clean water, SDG10 – reduced inequalities, SDG11 – sustainable communities, SDG17 – partnership for the goals.

Each team played two matches and the emphasis was on taking part rather than being too much of a competition. However, the winning boys team was Model Primary School and the winning girls team was Katutula Primary School. Well done everyone!

These children have had an opportunity that they wouldn’t usually have had; someone investing time teaching them new skills, time to play, time to have fun, time to forget about the difficulties in their day to day lives. Time to be part of a team, time to play a new sport, time to feel valued and important, time for self-esteem and confidence to grow. Time for nutritious food and clean water and time for gifts of pens & pencils to help with their education.

Thank you to everyone who has made these two weeks possible. It was a lot of organising, but it was worth it for the enjoyment on the faces of these children. Without the financial donations of our supporters, this rugby festival would have only been a dream. With your help it has been a wonderful experience for so many vulnerable children. Enjoy the photos, Sarah x

Rugby photos 11 & 12 Oct

Sarah’s blog 13/10/23

Well what can I say apart from a HUGE thank you to Jack Mphande who is Malawi Rugby Union’s Rugby Development Officer. Jack has continued working with more young people this week, ensuring that the adults he trained on Monday have had opportunities to coach their students with Jack supporting them. There have been lots of excited children who have embraced the new opportunities and new skills.

The young people Jack has been working with over the past couple of days have been from Chimwemwe Primary School, Model Primary School, Lwakwa Primary School and Nyabughi Community Rugby Club which was set up after Jack’s last visit.

Today is the final day of Jack’s visit – a tournament between all the teams from the second week. I will post photos from that later. But in the meantime, enjoy these photos of children having fun, learning new skills and having an opportunity to play together at a new sport just like children anywhere. This has all been possible because of your generosity. Thank you, Sarah x
