Thank you Edinburgh South Community Football Club

There will be lots of happy children in Malawi when these wonderful preloved kits arrive and are shared.

Sarah’s blog 17/4/26

It’s been another busy day at CLM HQ. Stuart headed over to Edinburgh this morning to collect an amazing donation of kids football kit. Thank you Edinburgh South Community Football Club for supporting us again.

There will be a lot of happy and excited children when these lovely football kits are distributed to primary schools which don’t have matching sports kit.

As well as helping to reuse and recycle preloved kit, these children, living in extreme poverty, will feel wonderful. This football kit will boost their mental health and self-esteem as they dream of being great footballers in their new (to them) kit. Kit which fits. Kit which matches the rest of their friends. Kits which aren’t ripped and full of holes. These kits help foster their sense of identity and sense of belonging. Thank you for making a difference.

So despite the fact that they don’t know any of the people at Edinburgh South Community Football Club, they know that they are there are people who think about them and care about them. That is so important to the wellbeing of children who are mostly orphans and all have suffered trauma. They are no longer forgotten.

Here are a few photos of the kit that has been boxed up. Thank you to JP for arranging the collection of kit and sorting it into the various teams. Thank you to Edinburgh South Community Football Club for sharing their preloved kit. Also, thank you to Stuart for, once again, being our Lifter and Shifter (his words) and driving to Edinburgh and back this morning.

We will share more photos and videos when the kit eventually arrives in Malawi. I am going to visit our projects next month, along with Liz, another trustee and there are sports matches organised for during that time. There will be lots of photos and videos to share.

Thanks again for supporting us and sharing with the children we help in rural Northern Malawi. Sarah x

p.s. We love this little video that was made of the football kit being collected. https://fb.watch/Gy6C1rsvUP

Thanks to St Mary’s School, Melrose

Thank you to St Mary’s School Melrose for your support. We are delighted that you have collected books & clothes for the orphans we help to support.

Sarah’s blog 6/3/26

Thanks to St Mary’s School, Melrose for this great support. I was contacted by Joanna a few months ago, asking if we would like some school uniform and books. One of the classes has been collecting these as part of their class work.

Joanna messaged recently to say that 20 boxes of books and clothes had been packed for us and they were in the process of raising the £17.50 per box to cover the cost of sending these boxes on the container to Malawi.

Joanna and her husband, Malcolm, took the 20 boxes to Dundee at the weekend to await the container. Thank you so much for your help both of you!

Once a container is packed, it takes at least three months to reach the final destination in Malawi. So we have to plan ahead and keep a note of what has been sent as it is a surprise to me too when boxes are opened in Malawi unless I check my list!

Primary schools in Malawi have 8 year groups. There can be up to 60 children in one class. Young people leaving primary school have to sit exams. They can only attend secondary school if they pass these exams. Since we started donating boxes of preloved books to two primary schools who had hardly any resources, the exam pass rate has risen by 19% which is amazing! How can children learn to read if they have no books? Our School Literacy Project IS making a difference to vulnerable young lives.

Thank you to the young people who have helped with collecting clothes & books and to their teachers for supporting them. Thanks also to those who have paid for a box to go on the container and helped St Mary’s reach their fundraising target. If you follow us on facebook and/or instagram, or sign up to receive my blogs by email, you’ll see the latest stories and photos from our projects in northern Malawi.

Myself and another trustee are visiting the projects we are helping to support in May… it’s only a few weeks away and we are getting very excited. There is lots of planning happening to ensure we make best use of our time. You can read about our trip on our GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/53c2955c2 Whilst we have paid for our own flights, insurance and injections etc, we are trying to raise some funds for the projects we are supporting and would be very grateful for a small donation. Please also tell your friends about our trip and the projects we are supporting. If you’d like to get in touch then our email is contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com

Many thanks again to everyone who has been involved from St Mary’s School, Melrose. We really do appreciate your kindness and support. There will be more photos once the boxes arrive in Malawi. Thanks again, Sarah

Giving out gifts from the Balfron 10k

Thank you for the donations from the Balfron 10k last year. Some great photos from Malawi. We will be collecting preloved shoes at this year’s event too.

Sarah’s blog 3/3/26

We were at the popular Balfron 10k race last year collecting preloved training shoes to send to the vulnerable people we support in rural northern Malawi. We were given almost 100 pairs of training shoes (children’s and adults) to send. Over the last few days, Levison and team have been giving out gifts from the Balfron 10k event.

There were t-shirts left over from previous races and the organisers kindly gave these to us. As you know, it takes a long time for things to arrive at their destination. However, last week, trainers and other shoes were given out to students at Bright Futures Secondary School and also to staff and volunteers. Everyone was very thankful for these gifts.

Yesterday, staff and volunteers were gifted the Balfron 10k t-shirts. On behalf of everyone who received these gifts, thank you so much. They are delighted to have been thought about. A small gift like a t-shirt means a great deal to the people who are living in extreme poverty.

We are going to be at this year’s Balfron 10K race again on Sunday 3rd May…exactly two months from now. Changing Lives Malawi will again be collecting trainers and other shoes of all sizes (no heels please). We must ask that all footwear is in good CLEAN condition. Would you be still happy to wear them? Do they have holes in the soles? The people receiving your preloved shoes and trainers walk miles every day, so the footwear needs to be functional and clean.

Can you tell your friends and spread the word so that we collect more than 100 pairs this year? There are hundreds of children and adults that we help to support and they would all love a new (to them) pair of shoes. Also, we would be grateful for a donation of £1 per pair of shoes to help towards transport costs. We are based in Balfron so this is our ‘home event’. Lets make it another successful one this year. Thanks also to Shoe Share Malawi who also donated training shoes to us and put us in touch with the organisers of the Balfron 10k event. Thanks so much, Sarah x

Also, some other news to share, myself and another trustee, Liz, are visiting the projects we support in Malawi for the first time in May. We are very excited and you can read about our plans here https://gofund.me/866bf18f0 and if you’d like to get in touch, our email is contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Enjoy the photos. Thanks again, Sarah x

Lichfield Spires Netball Club

Lichfield Spires Netball Club – your donated kit has arrived in Malawi. Thank you so much for helping to make a difference to vulnerable young people.

Sarah’s blog 19/2/26

Last summer wrote a blog about a huge donation of netball kit that we received from Lichfield Spires Netball Club. I will attach that blog so you can read about how the kit made the first part of the journey to Malawi.

Netball and football are the two national sports and young people very much enjoy playing these team sports. We have had lots of donations of other sports kit. But, apart from some netball bibs, this is the first proper netball kit that has been donated for use by vulnerable children and young adults. We bought some velcro squares with players positions to stick on to the kit. We also bought a couple of netballs and boxed everything up to go to Malawi.

This week, some of the girls at Bright Futures Secondary School tried on their new netball kit. This kit will make such a difference to their confidence levels and self-esteem. They know that people care about them to send such lovely netball kit. They play netball in school and amongst other local schools and at weekends. It is hoped in future that they will be able to join a netball league. Some of the girls are a bit shy as they’ve never worn netball kit before and aren’t used to being the centre of attention.

So to everyone at Lichfield Spires Netball Club – thank you for making a difference to these vulnerable young people. Most of them are orphans living with extended family. To Paul and Stuart who met halfway between us (central Scotland) and Lichfield, thank you for ensuring that this wonderful donation was able to reach us and then to Dundee in time for the container going to Malawi.

We will continue to share more photos and videos from actual netball matches but, for now, thank you again for making a difference and helping us continue Changing Lives (in) Malawi. If you’d like to get in touch, our email address is contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com . Enjoy the photos, follow us on social media, sign up for my blogs and watch out for more photos! Sarah x

Bags of kindness

Female teachers, staff and volunteers were delighted to receive gifts this week. They know their hard work is valued and appreciated. Thank you to our supporter for making these bags of kindness.

Sarah’s blog 11/2/26

There is a lovely lady who we know called Lilian. She is a person who always thinks of others and likes to keep busy. She is extremely good at sewing and reusing fabric. Lilian uses curtain fabric and other material to make bags. She gave us a box of bags which were on the container that has recently arrived in Malawi. I’m calling them bags of kindness.

Yesterday, female volunteers, staff and teachers were all delighted to receive one of Lilian’s bags of kindness. They also received bars of soap. They were surprised to receive these gifts and so happy as you can see from these photos. We wanted them to have these gifts so they know they are appreciated.

The nursery teacher, Mercy, also helps students at Bright Futures Secondary School with sewing classes. She said she would like to try making this style of bag and then show the students how to make them.

Mercy also said “This is a true sign that people out there think about us here at Bright Futures.”

Thank you Lilian for these bags of kindness and thank you everyone who helps us support vulnerable people in rural northern Malawi.

Kindness does matter. Kindness does make a difference. Even if we think we’ve not got a lot to give – it’s more than they have in Malawi – and together we can make a difference. If you’d like to help then you can email for bank details or donate through our website. Also you can donate via our QR code. contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Together, we can continue Changing Lives (in) Malawi. Thanks, Sarah x

Sunday Sports for Students

Thanks to teachers at Bright Futures Secondary School for organising Sunday sports for students!

Sarah’s blog 10/2/26

We were delighted to receive these photos and videos yesterday from the deputy head teacher at Bright Futures Secondary School. It was a day of Sunday sports for students and we are grateful to the teachers for organising this event. It looks like everyone had great fun playing football and netball.

Yesterday taught these vulnerable teenagers, who are mostly all orphans living with extended family, that they are important. It shows that people care about them enough to organise events for them. It shows that people care about them enough to send preloved sports kit for them. These young people are enjoying opportunities that they wouldn’t previously have had. As well as having fun with their friends, team sports are good for their confidence and self-esteem. Students at Bright Futures Secondary School are also learning skills and self-discipline.

Everyone also received a nutritious lunch to make the day even more special and to ensure they had enough energy to take part in the team sports. We are thankful for those who support us to send preloved sports kit to those who need it. If these are photos of preloved kit from your club then why not share with your friends and ask them to follow us on social media?

Sports kit (depending on sizes) is shared between primary and secondary schools and grassroots sports teams. Everyone is delighted to receive smart, matching kit. Julian Chenery, whose charity is ‘Wear a Sports Shirt Day’, spends his weekends travelling to various football grounds collecting preloved kit, watching football matches and enjoying the odd pint! We are so pleased that he includes the young people we are helping to support on his list of recipients of the preloved kit he collects.

In these photos kit is being worn from Bromley and Beckenham Hockey Club, Maidstone United Football Club, Borden Village Football Club and Seaton Town Football Club. As you can see, these preloved sports kits have a new lease of life and young people are enjoying wearing them proudly and confidently. Acts of kindness like this make a huge difference. There will be photos in the near future of more sports kit that has arrived on the latest container.

Would you like to help to pay for a box of sports kit to go on the container or would you like to contribute to providing food for a sporting event like this? Please do get in touch contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com or you can donate via our website or QR code. It’s always about teamwork. Thank you for being part of our team, Sarah x

Football Tournament and Feeding

Thank you to all the clubs and donors for the fantastic preloved football kits. These vulnerable children have a real confidence boost when they wear their new kit.

Sarah’s blog 26/11/25

Thanks to our supporters, we had funds to get a few schools together for a day of football. Football is one of Malawi’s national sports. Of course, everyone likes a football tournament, whether they are taking part or watching.

As I have mentioned previously, because the children we help to support aren’t eating properly each day, we will not hold a sports event without giving children something to eat and drink. The food shortage in Malawi is getting worse. Feeding children at an event like this makes it even more of a special, exciting day. The young people know they will have enough energy to play competitive sports with their friends. They will also probably sleep better that night with food in their tummies.

Thank you to everyone who donated money to help us feed everyone who took part. Also, a big thank you to those who donate preloved sports kit. This means a great deal to the young people. Previously they either didn’t have matching kit or it was full of holes because it was so old. Preloved sports kit is shared out to various primary schools and grassroots sports teams, as well as being kept for use by the orphans and other vulnerable children who play sport at the weekends.

Some of the people we need to thank for football kit are; Julian Chenery from the charity ‘Wear a Sports Shirt Day’. Julian spends almost every weekend collecting preloved football kit from different clubs and we are very grateful for his tireless work. He has sent a huge amount of preloved football kit to the children we help to support in Malawi. Paul Goodwin, another football enthusiast and collector of football kit who lives locally to me, gave us a few preloved football kits, some of which have been used in this tournament. And, of course, thank you to the clubs and supporters who have donated their preloved kit; Kilsyth Athletic FC, Collingham FC, Little Common FC, Seaton Town FC, Borden Village FC, Seafar Villa FC. I apologise if I have missed anyone…let me know and I will amend my post.

Here is one of the appeals we have to help us keep feeding hungry and malnourished children. https://donorsee.com/project/28717?share=1 Or you can give via the website or email me for bank details contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Thanks again for all your support, Sarah x

Supporting New Mothers in Malawi: The Mother & Baby Project

Today’s blog has photos and videos from a visit to the maternity ward at Chambo Health Centre.

Sarah’s blog 7/11/25

There is a maternity ward at the local health centre. Many of the new mums are living in extreme poverty and don’t have clothes & blankets for their babies, hence the need for the Mother & Baby Project.

We have some lovely supporters who are talented at knitting and crocheting and others who have donated clothes that their babies have outgrown. So we have been able to send lots of baby hats, clothes and blankets.

The idea is that, as well as receiving clothes at birth, if mum and baby return after a few weeks to collect some more clothes, the health care staff will have an additional opportunity to check that mother and baby are well.

Students from Bright Futures Secondary School visited Chambo Health Centre with some of the boxes of donated baby clothes & blankets. Everyone was very thankful for their visit and delighted to receive gifts for their babies. The new mothers are exhausted and in pain but had expressed their gratitude on receiving the lovely gifts for their newborn babies.

After students had helped sort out some gifts for the babies, they also helped by tidying and sweeping round the exterior of the health centre.

The lady speaking in the video is a relative of one of the newborn babies. She said she wished that when she had her babies that there were gifts like these and help available. It is her prayer that changes like this continue to happen in her grandchildren’s lifetime. She is speaking the local language, Chichewa.

The young man who is speaking in English is Mphatso, one of the students at Bright Futures Secondary School.

Many, many thanks to everyone who is supporting this very important project and letting new mums know that they, and their babies, are important and special. Without your help and ongoing support there would be no Mother & Baby Project.

I am planning to visit Malawi in June next year. The Mother & Baby Project is one of the projects I am passionate about. It’s making a difference to the vulnerable mothers and their babies. I would also love it if we were able to gift bars of soap to the new mums. This is one of the projects I am raising funds for in my GoFundMe ahead of my visit next year. It would be amazing if you could make a small donation to make a big difference. https://gofund.me/b8e7bf36c

I hope you enjoy the great photos and videos, Sarah x

Sewing Lessons at BFSS

Sewing classes at Bright Futures Secondary School are helping S3 and S4 students learn extra skills.

Sarah’s blog 26/10/25

Levison Mlambya, the Director of Bright Futures Secondary School, has sent these great photos and a video of S3 and S4 students who are taking sewing lessons and carpentry classes to learn skills for life.

In the sewing lessons they are learning to use the sewing machines that have been donated and sent on the container via The Bananabox Trust.

Learning skills for life will equip these vulnerable students, who are all living in extreme poverty, with a way to earn money in future, giving them choices and chances they wouldn’t have had previously. Many thanks to the donors of the sewing machines & sewing supplies.

If you’d like to make a donation to support buying more fabric we would be very grateful. https://donorsee.com/project/29253?share=1

The plan is that during sewing lessons at BFSS, they make reusable sanitary pads and bags to put these in and, when there are enough, give them out to those who need them in various local schools. Your financial support will be so helpful.

Thanks also to their sponsors for supporting them. There are still S1 students needing to be matched with sponsors to support their education. https://changinglivesmalawi.com/2025/10/11/international-day-of-the-girl-child/

Bright Futures: Helping Vulnerable Students Thrive

Thanks so much to All Saints CofE School, Maidenhead and to the charity Sal’s Shoes for making a difference to these vulnerable teenagers.

Sarah’s blog 8/10/25

When I was a teenager, I always loved going to choose new stationery ready for returning to school after the summer holidays and, most years, I’d get a new school bag and unform and shoes too…although I really disliked our brown school uniform! There was no question that, although there wasn’t lots of spare money, there was always enough to buy the things that my siblings and I needed.

The students that have just started in S1 at Bright Futures Secondary School are living in extreme poverty. Their families cannot afford enough food, let alone any money to buy school uniform, shoes and stationery. So, last week, they were overwhelmed when gifts were handed out to each of them. They’ve never had presents like this, that we and our children all take for granted.

Thanks to individual supporters, we were able to send new and preloved school uniform; shirts and blouses and skirts and trousers. I got in touch with a wonderful charity called Sal’s Shoes who have helped us out once before. They kindly agreed to give us shoes for the students at Bright Futures Secondary School. We (and the students) are so grateful for this support. Thank you for the wonderful work you do at Sal’s Shoes, collecting and sorting preloved outgrown shoes and sending them on to protect vulnerable children’s feet.

Also, All Saints C of E School, Maidenhead, had contacted us to see if we could use some uniform that they no longer needed as they had changed their school badge. Of course we said yes and were delighted with everything that they sent. The S1 students were delighted to receive their new back packs which they had no idea they would be getting. Thanks so much for these! The clothes from All Saints C of E School, Maidenhead, will be distributed over the next few weeks amongst other vulnerable children.

I had bought water bottles for the new students which I filled with; toothbrush & toothpaste, small bars of soap, pens, pencils, rulers, erasers and sharpeners. Each student was also given some exercise books. They were amazed as they’ve never had a day of receiving this many gifts all at once and certainly not lovely new presents like this. These donations will really help to motivate them to work hard. You can see in one of the photos, one of the girls is overcome with tears of happiness because she didn’t expect to receive all these lovely gifts.

There are two videos in which the S1 students are thanking Sal’s Shoes for their new shoes and also thanking All Saints School for their school bags. If you have donated school uniform, shoes, pencils etc…you can see where your donations are going and how much it means to the recipients. Thank you everyone.

We try to match each of these vulnerable students with a sponsor to help support financially with their education. As well as paying the teachers, part of the sponsorship money goes towards providing a substantial free school lunch each day. For most of these students, it is their only meal of the day and their families can share the small amount of food they have with the remaining family members. Many of these students are orphans, living with extended family. Many in the community have been affected by AIDS and HIV.

We still need to match the following students with sponsors; Veronica, Susan, Nellie, John, Wakisa, Lindwell, Schollastica, Robert, Brian, Lumbiro, Esther, Tusalifye and Ethel. That’s 13 vulnerable young people who need your help. There is an old saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’…..can we be part of the ‘village’ for these teenagers who really need our support? It’s only £25 per month to sponsor a young person. You can sponsor as an individual, share the cost with a friend or sponsor a young person through your club or business. Get in touch to make a difference and give a student a brighter future contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com Enjoy the photos and videos and I look forward to receiving your email if you’d like to give the gift of education to one of these students. Thank you, Sarah x

Balfron 10K – collecting shoes

Sarah’s blog 05/05/25

What an amazing morning we had yesterday at Balfron 10K (sponsored by The Mulberry Bush Nursery). The sun was shining and spectators and runners were out in force…what a great community atmosphere!

Many of the hundreds of children and young people we help to support do not own a pair of shoes. They walk long distances to get to school and nursery and their feet need protecting. Also they need trainers for playing their favourite team sports; football, netball and rugby.

So many people where we live have several pairs of shoes and children are growing quickly so their shoes still have lots of life in them. We were delighted when the race organisers agreed that we could come along and collect preloved shoes that we had asked for via social media. We also asked for £1 donations to cover the cost of sending each pair of shoes. We pay £17.50 per box on the container that goes to Malawi and there are associated costs in Malawi to collect the boxes.

We were absolutely delighted with the response and the 85 pairs of shoes/trainers that were donated. Thank you so much everyone! This is life changing for young people who do not have shoes or their shoes are far too small. I have also had two bags of shoes handed to me today so that takes us over 100 pairs now! This is an ongoing project so we are happy to accept preloved trainers, shoes, crocs or sliders at any time. Could we please respectfully ask that shoes are clean and in good condition.

I have included in the photos below our QR code if you didn’t manage to make a donation to cover sending your shoes yesterday or if anyone would like to make a donation in general via the QR code or website or you can email me contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com for bank details.

The 10k organisers kindly donated some surplus t-shirts from one of the previous races. These will help young people feel part of a team when playing football etc so will be shared between local primary schools. Thank you.

We had a great time chatting to people yesterday and made some good connections. I want to say thank you to my hubby Stuart who, as he calls himself, is the lifter and shifter… couldn’t do this without you. Also to Jackie who provides so much support in the background and willingly helps at events like this. We really do need more volunteers though just to make things a little bit easier and share the load. contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com if you’d like to get involved. Many thanks everyone and hope you enjoy the photos and video, Sarah x

ps we are also raising money to buy soap for each of the children and young people to take home to their families to help protect against the Mpox outbreak. If you can help then here is the link, thank you. https://donorsee.com/project/27307?share=1

Football Kit Donation Photos

We are very grateful for all the preloved football kit that has been donated for the vulnerable children & young people and to Julian from ‘Wear a Sports Shirt Day’ for his hard work and support.

Sarah’s blog 20/3/25

We are very thankful for the people who support our work. We always say it takes teamwork and Julian at ‘Wear a Sports Shirt Day’ charity is one of those fantastic people who regularly help the vulnerable young people in rural northern Malawi.

Julian spends most weekends travelling to football grounds to watch the games but to also collect donated preloved football kit. He shares what he collects amongst a few organisations and we are very grateful for his hard work and support. He regularly sends boxes on the Bananabox container and here are photos of some of what has been donated this time.

Some of the students at Bright Futures Secondary School enjoyed modelling these football kits. A couple of the kits will be kept on campus for use by students at Bright Futures Secondary School and also for the orphans who attend the weekly Feeding Programme at the weekend and play sports also. The other donated kits will be given to local schools who are in need of new sports kits.

It is currently the rainy season in Malawi but, once the rains are over, there will be a football tournament organised with all the local schools invited. Everyone looks forward to sports days like that with great anticipation and excitement.

Thank you again to Julian for all your hard work it is much appreciated. Also thank you very much to all the clubs who have donated kit to be reused in Malawi. Having matching football kit brings a sense of belonging, of pride in their team and of self-confidence. Knowing that people they have never met care enough to send them football kit makes a big difference to these vulnerable young people. Thank you on behalf of them, Sarah x
