We were absolutely delighted to be one of the beneficiary charities of Vets with Horsepower | Equine veterinary education to help charities .

A group of motorbike enthusiasts, who also happen to be equine vets at the very top level, plan a journey each year and give lectures at various points on their tour. A huge amount of planning and organisation goes into these trips each year by the team at Vets with Horsepower and the people organising all the events en route.

£15,000 is the amazing donation that we received – we were blown away by how much we received and what that money will help us achieve. THANK YOU again. We will now be able to go ahead with the £33k expansion of Bright Futures Secondary School. I will tell you a bit of background to BFSS for those who aren’t familiar with our charity.

We support a community in the rural far north of Malawi. Everyone is living in extreme poverty and there are many orphans as some families have been affected by HIV and AIDS. No big charities are feeding children in primary schools that far north so most children are malnourished. We have been sending money to facilitate a feeding programme once a week. Over 500 children of all ages come to receive their one proper substantial meal of the week. Some children and young people walk up to 15km or 20km from their homes. It’s not good enough, but all we can do currently while we help set up sustainable projects for their future.

We match the most vulnerable children and young people with sponsors. Whilst they are at primary school, they receive a monthly food parcel to supplement the food that they have at home. Secondary Education has to be paid for in Malawi, so sponsored young people who had passed their primary school leavers exams, were attending nearby secondary schools. The system in Malawi is that the young people with the best grades are chosen to attend secondary school. If they are not offered a place (even if they have passed their exams and have a sponsor to pay their fees) then they cannot attend secondary school. That is the end of their education. We found ourselves in this position with 11 sponsored young people who had passed their primary school leavers exams with no places at secondary school. So Bright Futures Secondary School was born.

After lots of fundraising, Bright Futures Secondary School opened with two classrooms on 7th November 2022. Then the next two classrooms were built in time for the new school year in September 2023. By then there were three year groups. Next month, September 2024, there will be four year groups at Bright Futures Secondary School for the first time. More teachers need to be employed and, as it is in such a rural location, more accommodation built to ensure that teachers have somewhere to live.

This latest project, costing £33,000, will provide further staff accommodation complete with solar power and further latrines/washing facilities to allow the school to expand to have four years of students. Work is well underway on the motel style accommodation which will give six teachers their own private sitting room and bedroom. New textbooks have been ordered for the new s4 as well as other supplies being sourced ready for the start of term on 16th September.

I am still trying to find sponsors to enable some students to be able to take up their places at Bright Futures Secondary School. One of the big costs at school is school lunches. We insist that students have a substantial and nutritious lunch each day. For most, this is their only meal of the day. It saves their family having to feed them. So we must ensure that they are fed. They also receive uniform, shoes and stationery so they are well equipped for school. If you would like to support a young person’s education it is less than £1 per day – only £25 per month. I could continue writing as I am passionate about the young people that we help to support being able to have the opportunity to reach their full potential. To have the choices and chances that we take for granted for our children. Education is their way out of extreme poverty and they are desperate to learn. Each of them want a brighter future. There are so many things that are happening and I am just hoping they all come together in time for the new term starting.

Everyone in Malawi is working hard on building staff accommodation and checking supplies for the new term as well as setting up income generating projects as well as planting vegetables to eat. Applications for the new teaching positions have been received and are being reviewed. This is in addition to the pastoral work that Levison does for the most vulnerable children and continuing to source supplies for the weekly feeding programme.

Here, Jackie is doing an amazing job with crunching numbers and making the donations we have received go far. There is never enough money for all the wish lists and requests that are needed to support 500+ of the most vulnerable children and young people but we are trying our best. Currently, Jackie is ensuring there is money to buy more text books as well as all the various supplies needed for the accommodation block build, wages and other monthly costs. We really are grateful for all she does.

What am I doing? Sometimes that is difficult to answer lol. Some days, caring responsibilities take over and I don’t have as much time to give as I’d like to our charity, but I can only do my best with the time I have. Other days, I am working hard from morning until evening ticking off jobs on my list as I go. I am trying to make our charity known to more people with the hope that more donations will come in over time. I’m trying to find more sponsors so young people can go to secondary school and have a brighter future. i work closely with Levison and we are a good team. I’m writing blogs, and updating social media as well as liaising with potential donors…. and (when there is time) writing new grant applications. Oh and packing boxes with my husband Stuart who does an amazing job of organising all of the boxes to be packed properly, labelled and taped up ready for the next part of the journey to Malawi.

One of the goals that we are working towards is to help the community we are supporting to be self-sufficient. We have some small projects on the site DonorSee. School holidays always mean that I don’t have as much time to devote to Changing Lives Malawi but that doesn’t mean nothing happens. I’ve applied for two grants this week. There are so many people chasing the same money that it’s not often that we get lucky…but fingers crossed!

At the end of last week, I received a cheque for £4,500 from The Inverclyde Trust, for which we are very grateful. This is the third time they have supported our work and this donation will go towards the next phase of teachers’ accommodation and latrines as more teachers will be needed at Bright Futures Secondary School in September. Thank you so much for making a difference again.

I’ve received two parcels of preloved shoes in the post and also two bags of shoes have been dropped off at our house. These will be great for the teenagers at Bright Futures Secondary School. Thank you again!

All Saints Junior School in Maidenhead emailed me to ask if we are still collecting preloved school uniform. They are changing their uniform and have some new and preloved clothes to send us as well as some new backpacks. This is a great donation and so many of the orphans we support will benefit from some lovely new clothes. All Saints are about to break up for their summer holidays but, once they are back, we look forward to bringing updates of the donations and also some fundraising that the children will be helping with. We are so glad that you got in touch and look forward to partnering with you after the school holidays.

Hopefully, later in the week, there will be photos of the next lot of boxes arriving at their destination. We have heard that the container has reached the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe, and is waiting to be released by customs. Once that happens, the container will reach its final destination at Ekwendeni, near Mzuzu. It’s always very exciting waiting for boxes and other supplies to arrive. Sometimes boxes were packed so long ago that we’ve forgotten what was in some of them – although I do keep an overall note of what is in the boxes and who things are for. I’m looking forward to seeing the preschool children with some new resources and also students at Bright Futures Secondary School with some topic books they requested.

Here are essays and photos from the S2 class at Bright Futures Secondary School. They are feeling very relieved to have just finished their national exams. The students will, hopefully, gain their Junior Certificate of Education, and then proceed to S3 in September. As you will see, many of them are older than usual…the older they are the more poverty they live in. They have missed years of school to work for a pittance and are now valuing being given the opportunity to catch up on their education.

Class sizes at Bright Futures Secondary School will always be smaller than average class sizes in Malawi but, as you can see, there is plenty of space at Bright Futures Secondary School for more students. The biggest cost we face is feeding the students a nutritious, substantial school lunch every day. For most students, this is their only meal each day….so free school lunches are vital for their health & wellbeing, concentration and motivation.

Happy 5th birthday to us! Changing Lives Malawi is 5 years old today. We are very grateful for all the support we have had along the way and thankful for everyone who has sponsored a vulnerable child or young person.

A lovely happy birthday message from some of the students at Bright Futures Secondary School

Here are a few highlights;

500 children and young people are being fed a nutritious meal once a week at the Feeding Programme. This is the only proper meal of the week for some and children are walking 15km-20km to receive this food. Some young people carry their younger siblings with them. Once a week isn’t enough but all we can afford while we are helping with setting up other projects. No big charities are feeding children in primary schools in that area so most are malnourished and all are hungry.
All who need them have been given reusable sanitary towels so they don’t miss a week of school every month. Girls now have equality with regards to their education and school attendance. These sanitary towels have been made by a group of girls who have been using the hand turn Singer sewing machines we sent. They want to start making clothes to sell.
up to 75 pre-school children attend Bright Futures nursery and are being fed breakfast each day.
- Vulnerable young people, whom we match with sponsors, are able to attend Bright Futures Secondary School free of charge. BFSS was built with the help of our supporters and opened in November 2022. More sponsors are needed for the students that want to take up their places in September 2024 contact_us@changinglivesmalawi.com It’s less than £1 per day. Students receive a free education, uniform, stationery and a free nutritious lunch each day. For most, this is their only meal of the day.
- There is clean drinking water, and a shower block for all the young people to use.
- Our school literacy project is supplying primary schools with boxes of preloved books to help students become more confident readers and to raise literacy levels.
- Fruit tree saplings have been planted for a sustainable future food source.
- Crops have been planted to be used in the feeding programme and students are learning how to care for them and the chickens as part of their agricultural lessons.
- Mother & baby project – we have some very talented people knitting beautiful blankets and clothes for the new babies on the maternity ward at Chambo Health Centre. The mums are extremely grateful for these beautiful things. If they go back a few weeks later, they are given other gifts for their babies and this is another chance for health professionals to see that mother and baby are well.

The above are just some of the ways that your support goes to help the most vulnerable people in Ibuluma. It’s always about teamwork and we very much appreciate everyone’s support.

There is still so much that needs to be done to help this community to get back on its feet. They want to be self-sufficient and just need a helping hand to get there. We will continue reaching out to try to connect with more people over the next five years so that there is a bigger team enabling more work to be done.

This is what they have posted on their facebook page today: Many of us live in societies in which having the latest mobile phone is considered to be an important ambition… a recent appeal by Changing Lives Malawi was either heartwarming or heartbreaking- depending on your view point. Their appeal was simply for pencils and paper for their school. That was it. Pencils and paper. Because they didn’t have enough for the students, so the students could learn.

CHANGING LIVES MALAWI is a new charity for Vets with Horsepower and we are delighted to be involved.

Changing Lives Malawi was started in 2019 to support the people who live in Ibuluma which is a village in an impoverished rural area of Northern Malawi.

The aim of the charity is to help this community improve their lives by working towards self-sufficiency mainly through education.

Initially they started with a variety of projects:-

1 – A Feeding Programme for over 500 children (they could not learn if they have nothing to eat)

2 – A Literacy Programme (they could not learn if they have nothing to read)

3 – A Preloved Uniform Programme (they would not attend school in just rags)

4 – A Period Poverty Programme (providing reusable sanitary products so girls did not miss a week of schooling each month)

5 – A Sponsored Children Programme (ensuring monthly food parcels a given to the most desperate children so they can attend school and not have to work to get food for the family)

These projects have all made a difference to the community, but it became clear that a big issue was secondary education.

In Malawi, Primary School education is paid for by the Government. However Secondary School must be paid for. Their nearest secondary school is in Chisenga 20km away. Due to lack of quality roads/public transport pupils who are successful in getting a place (there are not enough places available) need to board adding extra costs that most families cannot afford.

In the summer of 2022, 8 of the sponsored children passed their leaving certificates for Primary School but were unsuccessful in obtaining a place at Chisenga Secondary School.

They decided that to ensure that these children did not miss out on their next stage of education, a Secondary School should be build at The Foundation. It was a huge undertaking for the charity, but they understood the difference it would make to the community. It would also compliment the nursery that had already been set up and be a bonus to the local Primary School in Chambo, 1km away.

After a massive fundraising campaign on 7th November 2022, The Bright Futures Secondary School opened its door to its first pupils. The school is funded through the sponsorship of students.

For the 22/23 Academic year the school had 2 Classrooms and an S1 and S2 pupils. During this year they raised more funds to build 2 more classrooms so for the 23/24 Academic year they could have S1, S2 and S3 pupils.

At the end of S2 the pupils sit their Junior Certificate of Education. If this certificate is obtained, they can progress to S3. ALL the pupils in S2 passed their exams and were able to move up in to S3. It was a huge achievement for such a new school and a credit to the determination of the pupils and teachers.

Being such a rural location accommodation for teachers is very difficult to find.

In the first year with 2 classes, the school needed to have 5 teachers. They built accommodation for them. In the second year with 3 classes the school needed to have 7 teachers. They have built additional accommodation for the teachers.

However in the third year when the school will have 4 classes, the school needs to have a minimum of 12 teachers. They therefore need to build another accommodation block to ensure we meet the requirements of the Education Board and are able to keep providing opportunities for the pupils and the wider community.

With a sizeable proportion of the funds raised and the support from Vets with Horsepower, they will ensure that the project is completed.

Students in their final year at Chambo Primary School started their national primary school leavers exams yesterday and we wish them the very best of luck.

We are hoping, with your help, that this isn’t the end of the road for their education. Imagine passing your exams but being so poor that you couldn’t go to secondary school.

None of these young people can afford to go to secondary school, which needs to be paid for in Malawi. These 18 students are all expected to pass their exams. We now need to match these vulnerable students with sponsors to help pay for their education at Bright Futures Secondary School. It’s only £25 per month per student. This pays for their education, uniform, stationery and a cooked school lunch each day – for many this is their only proper meal of the day.

Myless Ng’ambi had dropped out of school due to family circumstances but they managed to get her back to school which is why she is 17 already. She (like the others) is desperate for an education. I am delighted to have matched her with a sponsor, so providing she passes her exams, she will be attending Bright Futures Secondary School in September.

An Amazing Quiz & Band Night!

Thank you to everyone who came along last night….it looked like everyone was having a brilliant time! The quiz that Douglas did for us was great fun! He’d put in a lot of work to prepare it and present it – so thank you so much Douglas!

There were so many raffle prizes that had been donated – thanks so much to everyone. We are very grateful to the following businesses; West Group Technical Services Ltd who donated a firepit made by Foldaway Fires, a cycling jacket from Endura, a hamper from Endrick Trading Ltd, vouchers from Tir na nog Holistic Centre, Milk & Honey Artisan Ice Cream, The Woodhouse, The Kitchen Window, Briarlands Farm, Wellsfield Farm, Ticketyboo Hair Design Buchlyvie and Exceptionail Buchlyvie. We had some wonderful prizes!

There was also a bottle of single malt whisky donated by one of our trustees, David Bell, to use as a prize for throwing £1 coins at….the nearest coin wins the bottle. There were so many coins being thrown and someone’s coin touched the bottle whilst lots of people were still waiting for a turn. So David, very kindly offered to buy a second bottle of whisky so everyone else got a turn to throw their £1 coins… this and the amount of raffle tickets that were purchased made a lot of money for our charity.

Then there is a huge thank you to local band, Acoustic Station, who gave their time and talents free of charge. Stuart, the drummer, is one of our trustees (and my husband) so I am slightly biased but they were amazing and people were up dancing all night!

After a very late night, I counted all the money this morning and added what was already paid directly into the charity bank account. £1,503 is the grand total! An amazing start to our fundraising for phase 2 of Bright Futures Secondary School. Thank you for buying tickets, raffle tickets, donating raffle prizes and being so supportive of what we, as a small group of volunteers, are trying to do. 100% of the money will go towards building the next phase of Bright Futures Secondary School. Thank you so much to those who helped set up and tidy up and, as always, it’s been amazing teamwork.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helps us to support the hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children in rural northern Malawi.

As today is Giving Tuesday, please could we ask that you donate to our charity if you are able?

Exciting times! Levison and his trustees have named the new school Bright Futures Secondary School! An excellent name as this new school will make hundreds, if not thousands, of children’s lives brighter and give them hope for the future.

Levison says that having a name for the school before even the first brick has been laid is important and the way things are done ahead of meetings with officials.

I’m very excited by this project but also slightly anxious as it’s my job, and our charity’s job, to raise the funds for this project as The Foundation has no funds of it’s own for such projects. Obviously, in time they will be self-sufficient and building a school is certainly providing employment opportunities for clearing ground and making bricks… and that’s just to start with.
